In short: there’s no single answer to the question of how much celecoxib cost at Walgreens pharmacy.
Walgreens, the nation’s second-largest pharmacy chain, is heading in that direction at once, thanks in part to a $13.5 billion acquisition of its medicine and diagnostics business by CVS and Walmart.
CVS and Walmart will now offer generic Celebrex at the lowest price in at least six months, the company said.
The dramatic acquisition comes after several of Walgreens’ competitors cut spending on Celebrex, the medication’s main ingredient.
CVS said it will offer lower-cost Celebrex at a co-pay of $9.50 a tablet, compared to $8.45 at Walmart, CVS said in a. The co-pay will be the same as co-seller CVS’s $8.50 price.
Walmart, which operates the world’s biggest supermarket chains, is also buying from CVS, although it will likely offer lower-cost Celebrex at a $9.50 co-pay.
Celebrex, made by Pfizer Inc., is among the world’s best-selling drugs, with sales reaching $23.6 billion in 2017, according to Kantar Group.
CVS, which owns the pharmacy unit for Walgreen’s CVS in Fort Worth, Texas, has spent more than $1 billion on Celebrex this year.
Celebrex, called CELEBREX, is a treatment for arthritis that helps people with arthritis live longer, have better pain control and are more likely to have a stronger joint infection, according to the manufacturer.
Last year, Celebrex sales totaled more than $1.7 billion, or 46.6 million pounds, according to Kantar.
Celebrex, by contrast, is a generic version of Pfizer’s drug Viagra, made by Pfizer Inc.
The FDA approved Celebrex in November 2017, and it is still available in some pharmacies.
The Celebrex price at Walgreens is set at $9.50 a tablet, compared to $8.50 at CVS.
Walmart, which owns the Walgreens pharmacy unit, has a slightly higher price tag, at $16.58 a tablet, compared to $13.58 at CVS.
But some pharmacy analysts have said the price at Walgreens will be less than at CVS.
“I think the price will be higher,” said Michael Hirsch, an industry analyst at the Friedman Lab’s Friedman Generics group, “especially with Walmart and CVS going on the same day.”
CVS also sells generic drugs at a lower price, but it’s unclear how much the higher price will mean for its stock, which is at $32.04, compared to $12.89 at CVS.
Walmart has said it will offer lower-cost Celebrex at $8.50 a tablet, compared to $11.33 at CVS.
In the meantime, patients with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis may still need to take the medication regularly.

Frequently asked questions
When the drug company Pfizer had to switch from the widely-used Celebrex, an anti-inflammatory pain reliever, to Pfizer’s Celecoxib in 2004, the cost went up to nearly $1,000. By the time the price went up again, the price for Celebrex had climbed to $2,000. That’s a much higher price than Pfizer’s generic drug, which was first developed to be cheaper, but was pulled from the market because of a patent expiration in 2006.
There’s a reason Celebrex is popular. In fact, Celebrex has been the subject of an anti-inflammatory, a treatment for arthritis. But there are some other, more complicated, reasons to be concerned about Celebrex.
A common concern among older adults is that it may make your arthritis worse. Some people take Celebrex to help relieve the symptoms of arthritis, but the drug has been linked to a higher risk of death. That risk could even be worse.
“Celebrex’s use is associated with cardiovascular and gastrointestinal health risks,” said Dr. Elizabeth Karr, M. D., director of the Center for Health Care Research at the Cleveland Clinic. “These problems are more common in older adults with osteoarthritis.”
The most common cardiovascular side effects of Celebrex are headaches, fatigue, dizziness, and chest pain. But Celebrex also causes a small number of gastrointestinal side effects. These side effects are similar to those experienced by other prescription drugs and can be life-threatening, Dr. Karr said.
“It’s a very unusual side effect for Celebrex to occur. Celebrex is used in combination with other prescription anti-inflammatory drugs,” she said. “If you’re taking one of these drugs, you may not be getting all of the benefits.”
Some of the other gastrointestinal side effects of Celebrex include diarrhea, stomach cramps, and gas. But these problems can be treated and the side effects are more likely to occur if you take the drug with food. For people taking it to treat arthritis, a low-dose Celebrex, or other arthritis drugs, the side effects of Celebrex are typically milder.
“The stomach side effects that have occurred in patients taking Celebrex have not been seen in patients who took the drug to treat arthritis,” said Dr. Karr. “There is no evidence that the side effects have been seen with Celebrex.”
Some people who take the drug for arthritis may also take other drugs for their arthritis, such as anti-seizure drugs, to help reduce pain and inflammation in the joints. But for arthritis drugs to work effectively, the drug must be taken for at least three months.
People who take it to treat their arthritis may also take other anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce inflammation and pain. Some of these drugs include:
Some of the drug companies also sell prescription-strength pills that people take daily to help treat arthritis. They include Johnson & Johnson, Bristol-Myers Squibb, GlaxoSmithKline, and Bayer. They’re among the top 25 prescription drugs on the market.
In April, the Food and Drug Administration approved Celebrex for the treatment of arthritis. It was only available as a generic drug in December 2003. But the generic version is cheaper, and the FDA approved it for the first time in 2004.
The company said Celebrex is the most widely prescribed arthritis drug for arthritis in the U. S.
The generic version of Celebrex is also used for other conditions. In December of 2005, the FDA said it had approved a generic version of Celebrex, but it was approved for only three years.
